Background

We have developed a fairly capable ELN for the UH biotechnology program based up the Drupal content management system. This has provided a low-barrier approach to providing students with exposure to basic ELN capabilities. A distinct advantage in this approach over other previous attempts at open source or free ELN platforms by other groups (e.g., ELN at Sourceforge) is that Drupal will undoubtedly continue to be improved and expanded because of its extensive use for other purposes (e.g., whitehouse.gov, Economist.com), regardless of whether or not it is used for an ELN framework. Also, Drupal has many modules currently available that can be repurposed easily for use with an ELN. Therefore, towards the end of continuing to explore the use of Drupal as the basis for an ELN, we have created this community website to share ideas and enhance communications concerning this approach.
